The sacred utterance or chanting of Sanskrit Mantras allows us to move into a higher level of consciousness. When chanted with pure intention and devotion to God, the mantra elevates the yogi towards the higher Self. The True Self, the One that is the same in all of us. We chant just like we practice asana, "because it needs to be done." Never practice for the fruits of your actions, but simply as an offering to God.
